A Summer School Studio for the Architectural Association with AKVK.
Workshop Brief:
Refining a focus on the city, the spatial and temporal complexity of London is sampled at a resolution of one square metre. Selected one metre by one metre points across the city become micro- sites for examination, consideration and imagination.
Employing sound, image and transmission, the effect of the specific will be considered in relation to the general. The pixel, the film-frame and the point-source provide a locus for re-examining a city composed of shifting aggregates of relation and possibility.
Through the conceptual frame of the square metre, cinematic experiments in sound, image and duration allow the microscopic and the gradual to register as forces of change. The rise and fall of architectures of unpercieved magnitudes implies a constant reweaving of the city fabric.
This unit measures shifts across the meters in multiple registers, such as:
Sensorial
A slow fatigue, long squint, brief exhale, an echo.
Microclimatic
Chance of clouds, possibility of rain, hope of shelter.
Boundary
Inside, outside. Inclusion, exclusion. Overhead, buried.
Chronology
Forgotten, memorialized, predicted, unexpected, now.
Transmission
Electromagnetics, EVP. Voices, hauntings. A whisper.
Materiality
Compressed. Cracked, buckled and worn. Fading reverberation.
Psychological
Quiet and comfort. Suspicion and fear.
